Practical Learning

The Ethio-Italy School in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia received 15 computers from the Ethiopian Computer Refurbishment & Training Centre

· A computer lab has been established, serving the school’s 1500 students
· Theoretical lessons have been replaced with hands-on, practical learning
· Students and teachers are benefitting from internet access

Digital Boost

The Jegnoch Primary School in the Harari regional state of Ethiopia received 12 computers

· A computer lab now provides an hour of IT training per week for students from grade 5 and above
· A new lab with internet access is being built to accommodate more computers
· The school teachers also use the computers for lesson preparation and training

Special Needs Training

The CARDOS community centre in Addis Ababa provides ICT access and training to the blind, deaf and physically disabled

· Specialist software including JAWS, a screen reading software, is used at the centre
· Each training course is completed with a graduation
· Trainees acquire invaluable skills and employment opportunities

Digital Whizkid

Bethlehem, an elementary school student in the Harari region of Ethiopia, has gained advanced knowledge of IT as a result of access provided in her region

· Bethlehem has studied hardware and software troubleshooting, maintenance and advanced software
· She now helps students of her age and above to learn basic computer skills
· Bethlehem has become a role model to other children and is a true inspiration

New Chances

The TVET (Technical and Vocational Education Training) college in Dire Dawa acquired 10 computers to establish a new ‘Technology Transfer’ Department

· 4 computers are used in classrooms for practical IT training
· Teachers use 6 computers to facilitate the preparation of teaching aids, proposals and exams
· There are plans to procure more computers to establish an IT lab for students

Fivefold Capacity

The Awmejahidin Elementary School in the Harar region of Ethiopia previously had only three computers for office use and now have 15

· The school has now established a new computer lab
· A trainer was hired to coach the teachers who are now able to teach basic IT skills to the students
· All grade 5 and above students spend time in the lab and are enjoying learning computer basics
